Philosophical interest in neuroscientific explanation and the role played by mechanistic models, computational models and models positing representational contents has surged in the last couple of decades. At the same time, alternative accounts of neuroscientific explanation emphasising dynamical models and non-causal/non-mechanistic explanatory practices have gained prominence in the philosophical literature.
The aim of this workshop is to
-
examine how these different kinds of explanation gain explanatory import in neuroscience,
-
gauge the contribution they each make to neuroscientific understanding,
-
examine the extent to which they are used complementarily in explanatory practice, and
-
bring together philosophers and neuroscientists interested in the theory and practice of neuroscientific explanation.
